Dear Minister
I am writing to express my deep concern at the Australian Federal Police’s application to redevelop the Australian Institute of Police Management at Spring Cove, North Head.
The community is outraged that the precious environment at North Head would be sacrificed to build a $21 million conference centre for police.
The development would destroy a ‘critical habitat area’ for the endangered Little Penguins (the only breeding colony on the mainland); it would obliterate the foraging area for the Long-nosed Bandicoot (another endangered species); it would require 21 mature trees (up to 30m high) to be cut down to make way for buildings and car parks; it would contaminate Spring Cove (Sydney Harbour’s only aquatic reserve) and it would forever change the landscape of an area significant as one of the first places of contact between indigenous Australians and Europeans.
I am aware that the NSW Department of Planning is awaiting a Preferred Project Report from the AFP before it approves the development.
For Debus/Garrett: The community requests that your government instructs the AFP to withdraw its development application in light of the environmental and historical damage it will cause.
For Sartor/Firth: The community requests that your government rejects the AFP’s development application in light of the environmental and historical damage it will cause.
Please, stop the development for the sake of the environment, the penguins and for future generations.
